Grappling X Is A Success
On Saturday July 12, 2008, I took a drive out to the National Guard Armory at the Fresno Fairgrounds where the traveling circuit tournament Grappling X was being held. I was very wary about the turnout for this tournament as the entry fee was $50 and most tournaments in Fresno are a fraction of that fee.
I walked in not knowing what to expect and was very pleased and excited on what I was seeing. There were over 100 competitors in various divisions including male, female, kids and adults. Mats were spread across the floor with about four different matches usually going on at the same time. This was a very well run event that was never a minute behind schedule, I checked my watch.
I tip my hat off to Shawn Fowler and the rest of the Grappling X crew and I hope they keep to their plan and return at the beginning of 2009. Fresno needs more organized events like this and are well worth the $50 entry fee, if you do not want to believe me ask any of the participants and they will tell you the same. I was even pleased with the pricing of their snack bar with more than reasonable pricing.
Local promoters take note and local fighters, well, do not miss this tournament the next time its in town, it’s a great way to build experience and meet fighters from the area and some from outside the valley. I want to give congrats to Pacific Martial Arts for earning the first place team award, Central Valley Martial Arts for a Second Place Team finish, Team Undisputed from San Diego, CA for having some great grappler's on their team and getting the Third Place Team Award. Also, Congratulations to Joe Soto of The Garage in Porterville for winning the Grappling X Intermediate Absolute Division. Special Thanks to Shawn Fowler and the Grappling X crew for allowing us to cover their show.
